Box Score TOMS RIVER, NJ - Trailing by 24 points at halftime, 49 to 25, the Northampton women's basketball team rallied in the second half to cut the deficit to 10, at 67-57 with 5:20 remaining, but Ocean County College was able to regain momentum and finish off the game with an 11-6 run to claim the 78-63 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Viking Athletic Center.
Poor free throw shooting (5 of 16) and lack of production from behind the arc once again plagued the Spartans, who did not make a 3-pointer in the contest. "I was very happy with how well the girls played in the second half," commented Head Coach
Alyssa Bonenberger, "but we once again continue to make mistakes in areas that we can correct, such as unforced errors with the ball and free throw shooting. It makes it awful difficult when you get down by 20+ plus points in the first half ... unfortunately we just didn't play as well as we could in the first two quarters."
Briona McClain (Stroudsburg, PA /Pocono Mt. West ) led the Spartans with 27 points, while
Ashley Robinson (East Stroudsburg, PA /East Stroudsburg South) added 11.
McClain led the charge on the boards, hauling down 17 rebounds,
Montana Cassaro (Bangor, PA /Bangor) had 15 and
Maria Pezzino (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic ) added 12.
Kelsey Miller (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) and Robinson each had 4 assists.Â
The loss drops Northampton to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in Region XIX.
Ocean improves to 7-2 overall and 7-2 in Region play.Â
The Spartans are now off for holiday break until January 11th when they host Valley Forge Military Academy.Â
