SEWELL, NJ - The Northampton women's tennis team won the 2021 Region 19 Championship on Saturday afternoon, capturing a "winner-take-all" match at 1st doubles vs. Camden, to secure their second consecutive Region 19 title.
The Spartans entered the day trailing the Cougars 7-5, but secured victories at #1 singles, #2 singles, #4 singles, #2 doubles, and at #1 doubles, to clinch the title 10-9.
In singles play,
Elizabeth Hozza (Northampton, PA/Northampton ) remained undefeated, winning the championship at 1st singles, downing Amanda Baliban (Camden); 6-2, 6-2.
Emilee Brewer (Bangor, PA/Bangor) took home top honors at #2 singles, defeating Allison Makowski (Camden) 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.
Morgan Putvinski (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor) earned top honors at #4 singles, downing Emily Lyons (Camden) 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
In doubles,
Hanna Nicholls (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and
Morgan Putvinski (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor) continued their winning streak, defeating Emily Lyons and Barbara Marinero (Camden); 6-1, 6-4, to set up the winner-take-all match at #1 doubles.
With the team score tied at 9-9 and the Region Championship at stake,
Elizabeth Hozza (Northampton, PA/Northampton ) and
Emilee Brewer (Bangor, PA/Bangor) took down Amanda Baiban and Allison Makowski (Camden); 7-5, 6-4 to bring the title back to Northampton.

SPARTAN HISTORY
Elizabeth Hozza (Northampton, PA/Northampton ) becomes the third Spartan to win the Region Championship at #1 singles, joining Elise Van Ormer in 2018 and Erin Volutza in 2016.
The title at 1st doubles for Hozza and Brewer is the second Region Championship at that position for Northampton, following Valeria Ceron and Emily Moss in 2015.

The NJCAA National Championship is slated for October 29-31, 2021 in Peachtree City, Georgia.
