BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 campaign with an 85-70 victory over Prince George's Community College (MD) on Tueday evening, coming back from a 15-point halftime deficit.
Trailing 49-34 at the intermission, Northampton held PGCC to 21 second half points on 17% shooting from the field, outscoring the Owls 51-21 to earn the season-opening victory. "We made a couple adjustments at halftime," remarked Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "but it really just came down to us settling down and executing. I thought we really stepped up defensively in the second half, taking away the 3-point shot from them, and that obviously created some offensive opportunities for us."
Michael Marable (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) recorded a double-double in his first collegiate game, scoring a team high 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Mel Copeland (Allentown, PA/William Allen) added 18 points,
Amyr Fox (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East ) had 16,
Gary Francis (Morrisville, PA/Pennsbury) 14 and
Kymir Roper (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby,) chipped in with 8 points and 11 boards.
The Spartans shot 52% from the field and out-rebounded the Owls 41-32.
Anthony Perry led PGCC with 15 points.
The Spartans, now 1-0, are off until November 9th when they host Penn State Hazleton at 7pm.
PGCC falls to 0-1 with the loss.
