BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Montgomery County Community College scored 7 runs in the final three innings to upset Northampton, 8-6, on Tuesday afternoon in Region 19 baseball action at Spartan Park, snapping Northampton's 9-game winning streak.
The Spartans, who received votes in the NJCAA national poll on Monday, led 4-1 entering the 7th inning, but the Mustangs rallied, scoring 3 runs in the 7th and 4 in the 9th, and then held off Northampton in the bottom of the 9th, for the 8-6 victory.
Northampton got on the board in the 5th inning, with
Jordan Siket (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) striking the big blow with a single to center field, that scored
Jacob Yurkovitch (Pen Argyl, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) and
Sean Granahan (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn).
After Montgomery took an 8-4 lead in the 9th,
Jacob Yurkovitch (Pen Argyl, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) started off the bottom half of the inning with a walk and then scored on a homerun from Granahan, cutting the deficit to 8-6. Montgomery then closed the door on the Spartans, improving to 5-12 all-time vs. Northampton.
Isaiah Lockette (Steelton, PA/Steelton-Highspire) finished 2 for 4,
Sean Granahan (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn) was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and
Jordan Siket (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead Northampton.
Evan Zwolenik (Northampton, PA/Northampton) took the loss in relief of starter
Colby Butczynski (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area), allowing 4 runs on 4 hits in 2.1 innings of work. Butczynski's final line was 6.2 innings pitched, 9 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), and 2 strikeouts.
The loss drops Northampton to 9-4 overall, while Montgomery improved to 6-0.
The Spartans are off until Saturday when they head to Delaware Technical College for a doubleheader.
