TOMS RIVER, NJ - The Northampton men's soccer team opened the 2021 campaign with a 7-1 loss at Ocean County College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans came out early in the contest with a fury, putting multiple shots on goal, but could not connect. Ocean took control of the contest about 20 minutes into the first half, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to go up 1-0. The Vikings added 4 more first half goals to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.
Northampton came out of halftime as the aggressor for the first 10 minutes, but Ocean once again held off the Spartan attack and countered with 2 more goals of their own.
Hatungimana Salem (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) converted a penalty kick to give the Spartans their only goal of the contest.
Koda Whalen (Llewellyn, PA/Minersville Area) recorded 13 saves in goal to lead Northampton.
The Spartans, 0-1-0, are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Camden County College, which is ranked 3rd in the latest NJCAA national poll.
Ocean improves to 3-0-0 with the victory.
