Men's Soccer Downs Lackawanna College 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season with a 2-1 victory over NJCAA Division II Lackawanna College on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.

Hatungimana Salem (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) opened the scoring for Northampton, converting a penalty kick just 5 minutes into the contest, after Dominic Martucci was taken down in the box.

The Spartans held the 1-0 advantage until just minutes before halftime when Noah Barton found the back of the net to tie the contest at 1-1.

The second half was a back and forth affair with both teams unable to capitalize on scoring opportunties, until Hatungimana Salem (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) was able to slide a shot past Matthew Pfohl with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game.

The Spartans were able to hold off the Falcons over the final 3 minutes to earn the 2-1 victory.

Koda Whalen (Llewellyn, PA/Minersville Area) made 9 saves and Wingate Hopkins (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Ponte Vedra (FL)) added 1 for Northampton.

Head Coach Mario Barrantes praised the play of defender Anthony Morsillo (Easton, PA/Easton), calling him the "man of the match" for saving 3 goals and his tough, confident play.

Northampton, which improves to 1-2-0 overall, will host Montgomery County Community College on Tuesday at 3:30pm.

Lackawanna College falls to 0-2-1 with the loss.
