BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team used a dominating performance at home on Tuesday afternoon to down Lehigh Carbon Community College, 2-0, improving to 16-1-1 all-time vs. their cross-town opponents.
The Spartans outshot the Cougars 28 to 1, controlling possession for the majority of the contest. "I thought we did a good job rotating play from side to side," remarked Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "but we simply could not put the ball in the goal, thankfully Rodrigo was able to get us on the board late in the first half."
Rodrigo Maguina (Peru/Easton) rocketed a shot into the upper 90 of the Cougar net from 30 yards out, with just 1:42 left in the first half, to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
Play remained consistent in the second half, with the Spartans dominating possession, but unable to find the back of the net.
Finally, in the 75th minute,
Nicholas McCoy (Bangor, PA/Bangor) blasted home a left-footed rocket just inside the post to put the Spartans up 2-0.
Drake Brackett (West Easton, PA/Wilson) would earn the win in goal, making just one save.
The win moves Northampton to 8-2-1 overall, 4-2-1 in Region 19 and 2-0-1 in the EPAC.
LCCC falls to 3-8-3 overall, 0-4-2 in the Region and 0-2-2 in conference.
The Spartans will look to clinch their second consecutive EPAC title with a win or tie vs. Montgomery County Community College on Thursday afternoon in Blue Bell, :Pa.
