BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team ended the regular season on Monday afternoon with a 2-2 tie vs. visiting Ocean County College at Spartan Field.
Despite wet, rainy conditions, the two teams battled for 110 minutes in a playoff-like atmosphere, with outstanding play on both sides.
Ocean got on the board first when a Spartan defender slipped and opened a clear path to the goal, giving the Vikings the 1-0 lead.
The Spartans started quickly in the second half with
Rodrigo Maguina (Peru/Easton) tying things up at 1-1 with a hard strike to the corner of the goal, off a free kick.
Northampton took their first lead of the game with 5 minutes remaining when
Henry Pineda (Allentown, PA/Dieruff) deposited a
Nicholas McCoy (Bangor, PA/Bangor) pass into the back of the net, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
Ocean responded with only 1:56 remaining in the contest, capitalizing on a defensive miscommunication by the Spartans to tie the contest at 2-2.
Both teams battled through two 10 minute overtime periods, filled with a number of scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to score the game-winner.
"Really well-played game despite the conditions," stated Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "Ocean is very talented, they were just coming off beating Bergen, so we knew we would have our hands full. I thought both teams played very hard and executed extremely well given the elements."
Northampton, which received votes in the latest NJCAA poll, finishes the regular season at 10-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in Region 19.
Ocean finishes 8-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in Region 19.
Both teams will now wait to find out their seed for the upcoming Region 19 Tournament. Seeding will be announced Wednesday evening from the Mt. Airy Lodge in the Poconos.
