BLUE BELL, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team opened the Region 19 portion of their schedule with a 73-60 victory over Montgomery County Community College on Tuesday evening at the Mustang Center.
After a very tight first half, which saw the Spartans hold a slim 35-33 advantage, Northampton was able to outscore the Mustangs by 11 in the second stanza to earn the 13-point win.
"We did a great job maintaining our composure down the stretch," commented Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "Montgomery played well and Coach Collins has the program going in the right direction. This win was important for us, we needed a win on the road, especially given that this was a Region 19 and EPAC contest."
Aslyn Toledo Rivera (Allentown, PA/William Allen) lead the team in scoring with 17 points, followed by
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenburg), who registered a double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Kania Day (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore
Genesis Martinez (Reading, PA/Muhlenburg) made her season debut and grabbed 12 boards.
The Spartans finished with 13 assists as a team and knocked down 19 of 25 free throw attempts (76%).
The win moves Northampton to 4-3 overall, 1-0 in Region 19 and 1-0 in the EPAC. The Spartans improve to 19-3 all-time vs. the Mustangs.
Montgomery falls to 2-2 overall, 2-2 in Region 19 and 0-2 in conference play.
The Spartans, ranked 15th in the latest NJCAA poll, are off until Tuesday November 29th when they host USCAA member Manor College at 5pm.
