BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
Brennan McCarthy became the winningest coach in Northampton basketball history, notching his 139th career victory on Saturday, as his 9th ranked Spartans downed the Community College of Philadelphia, 85-70, at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
Northampton held the Lions to 31% shooting, including just 3 of 16 from distance, and had 7 steals in the victory.
CJ Miles (Bangor, PA/Bangor) had 18 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 5 assists, while
Keenan Roberts (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
"Great team win today, I thought our defensive intensity was good, even though we lost the battle on the boards (44-50)," stated Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "we made them work for their shots and that allowed us to get some points in transition."
McCarthy, in his 8th season, improves to 139-63 (69%) during his tenure at Northampton, including an 82-28 (75%) mark in EPAC games. McCarthy eclipsed Fran Toner, who compiled a career record of 138-119 (54%) during his 9 year run in Bethlehem, from 1989 thru 1998. "I've been fortunate to have alot of good players and some outstanding assistant coaches during my tenure," remarked McCarthy, "I would like to thank each of them for their contributions to the program."
The win moves the 9th ranked Spartans to 8-1 overall, 4-0 in Region 19 and 4-0 in the EPAC.
Philadelphia falls to 2-7 overall, 2-4 in Region 19 and 2-2 in conference play.
The Spartans return to the Spartan Center on December 6th when they host Harrisburg Area Community College at 7pm, there is no women's game prior to the men that evening.
The College will be honoring the men's soccer team at halftime of the men's game.
