BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In a thrilling playoff contest that saw 13 lead changes and 10 ties, 3rd seeded Brookdale Community College scored 10 unanswered points in the last 3:11 to overcome a 5-point deficit and defeat 2nd seeded Northampton, 73-68, on Wednesday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Center in the Region 19 semifinals.
Trailing 68-63 with just over 3 minutes to play, the Jersey Blues held the Spartans scoreless the remainder of the contest to earn the win and advance to the Region 19 championship game vs. RCSJ-Gloucester on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans had 5 players in double figures, led by
Deovion Yates (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) with 16,
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North) 14,
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) 12,
Bryanna Rivera (Reading, PA/Greenfield (MA)) 10 and
Briona McClain (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) 10.
While the Spartans dominated the backboards, 55 to 30, led by
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North) with 17 rebounds, the charity stripe spelled disaster for Northampton, as they finished 12 of 29 (41%) from the line. "The foul line has been a struggle all season for us," commented Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "and it really hurt us tonight ... but credit Brookdale, they are a very good team and executed down the stretch. Overall, I am very proud of the girls and the season we had and I am looking forward to next season."
Northampton finishes the season with an overall record of 14-7.
Brookdale improves to 17-10.
