BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton baseball team split a doubleheader with 6th ranked Herkimer College on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 14-10 and then rallying to take game two, 8-7.
Game One - Lost 10-14
In game one the Spartans fell behind 10-0 after 3 innings and then cut the margin to 12-7 after 6 innings, but couldn't pull ahead of the hot-hitting Generals, who had 4 homeruns in the game.Â
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) led the offense with a 2 for 4 performance with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, while
David Baltrusaitis (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) added a double and 2 RBI for the Spartans.Â
Ashton Johnson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) fell to 3-1 on the season, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits over 2 innings.Â
Ryan Gordon (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) and
Jake Black (Bethlehem, PA/Elizabethtown Area ) both worked in relief, allowing 11 runs (5 earned), striking out 3 and walking 2.Â
Game Two - WON 8-7
The Spartans fell behind early once again, trailing 6-0 after one inning, but cut the margin to 7-5 after 6 innings and then scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead and then closed the door on the Generals in the top of the 7th to earn the 8-7 victory.Â
Trailing 7-5 entering the bottom of the 6th,
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) led off the inning with his 2nd homerun of the game to cut the margin to 7-6.Â
Isaiah Lockette (Steelton, PA/Steelton-Highspire) followed with a single to left field and then
Luke Spencer (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) drilled a 2-run homerun over the right field fence to give Northampton an 8-7 lead.Â
Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) closed the door in the top of the 7th, inducing the Generals to hit into a game-ending double play. McGourty, who came on in relief of
Patrick Flynn (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond), went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, strking out 5 and walking 1, in earning the victory.Â
Santangelo finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Spencer was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)) reached base 3 times with 3 walks and had a run scored.Â
The split moves Northampton to 10-3 overall on the season and 5-2 all-time vs. Herkimer.Â
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Kingsborough Community College (NY) for a doubleheader scheduled for noon.Â
