BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton softball team earned their first series sweep of the season, downing Union County College 8-2 and 12-0 in their Region 19 doubleheader on Wednesday at Spartan Field. Freshman
Regina Bangcoro (Easton, PA /Easton) finished 3 for 6 with 2 homeruns and 6 RBI on the day and pitched 7 innings in the two games, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 11.
Game One - Northampton 8 | Union 2
The Spartans jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings, thanks to the bat of
Regina Bangcoro (Easton, PA /Easton), who hit a 2-run homerun in the 1st inning and followed that up with a grand slam in the 2nd. Bangcoro finished 2 for 3 with 6 RBI and 2 runs scored to lead Northampton.
Madelyn Ott (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) went 2 for 4 and
Makaylah Sutton (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) was 1 for 3, as the Spartans used 5 hits and 9 walks to generate their 8 runs.
Bridget Pavelko (Bethlehem, PA /Notre Dame - Green Pond ) earned the victory in the circle with 5 innings of work, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out 8 and walking 4. Bangcoro finished up the final two innings, striking out 5 and only allowing 1 hit.
Game Two - Northampton 12 | Union 0
The Spartans got off to another quick start in game two, plating 11 runs in the first two innings.
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor) hit a 3-run homerun in the 1st inning and
Bridget Pavelko (Bethlehem, PA /Notre Dame - Green Pond ) added a RBI double to give Northampton a 4-0 lead after one.
Klingle and Pavelko combined again in the 2nd inning, with Klingle hitting a run-scoring double and Pavelko launching a 3-run homerun. Klingle finished 2 for 4 with 4 RBI and Pavelko was 2 for 2 with 4 RBI, while
Madelyn Ott (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) added 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Bangcoro earned the win, pitching a complete game 1-hit shutout, including 6 strikeouts.
The sweep moves Northampton to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in Region 19.
Union falls to 1-13 overall and 1-4 in the Region.
The Spartans are back on the diamond on Sunday when they travel to RCSJ-Cumberland to face the Dukes at 12pm.
