BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 8th ranked Northampton Baseball team earned a doubleheader split on Sunday, downing Camden County College 7-4 in game one and dropping the nightcap 14-13.
Game One - Northampton 7 | Camden 4
The Cougars of Camden struck early, scoring 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning, but starter
Ashton Johnson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) settled down and then shut the door for the next 5 innings, finishing with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts. Ryan Gordan came on in the top of the 7th to record the final out.
Northampton got on the board in the bottom of the 1st as
Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) singled,
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) doubled and then
Luke Spencer (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) knocked them both in with a double to right field.
The Spartans added 3 more runs in the 2nd, with back to back doubles from
Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) and
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)), followed by a
Max Rivas (Toms River, NJ/Toms River - South (NJ)) single, a walk to Sabater, and a sacrifice fly from Santangelo that scored Rivas.
Santagelo finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBI, Spencer was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI and Walker went 2 for 3, including a homerun, with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Game Two - Camden 14 | Northampton 13
In game two, the Spartans took a 12-7 lead into the 7th inning, only to see the Cougars score 7 runs to take a 14-12 lead. Northampton responded with a run in the bottom half of the 7th as
Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) singled home
Isaiah Lockette (Steelton, PA/Steelton-Highspire) to make it 14-13, but Camden closed the door and earned the stunning 1-run victory.
Camden had 11 hits in the victory, including 5 homeruns, including 2 in the decisive 7th inning.
Offensively for Northampton,
Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) finished 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI,
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) was 2 for 2 with a homerun and 3 RBI, and McGourty ended 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.
McGourty took the loss, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) in his one inning of work, striking out 2 and walking 2, while giving up 4 hits.
Jake Black (Bethlehem, PA/Elizabethtown Area ) worked 3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 6 K's, while starter
Patrick Flynn (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) lasted 2.1 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts.
The split moves Northampton to 27-6 overall and 3-2 in Region 19.
Camden moves to 16-16 overall.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Division II Lackawanna College.
