BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the 4th inning,
Luke Spencer's (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) grand slam gave Northampton a 9-5 lead that they would not relinquish on their way to a 15-11 victory over Division II Lackawanna College on Monday afternoon at Spartan Park.
The Spartans jumped out early on the Falcons, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, highlighted by a 2-run single from
Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond).Â
Lackawanna answered with a run in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th to take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom half of the 4th,Â
Michael Wambold (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) reached on an error,
Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) singled and
Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) walked to set the table for Spencer's bases clearing blast.Â
The Spartans added 4 more runs in the 5th to go up 13-6 and then cruised to the 15-11 win.Â
Spencer finished 1 for 3 with 5 RBI, Sabater was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored,
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)) went 1 for 3 with a walk and
Ryan Gordon (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) had 2 hits to lead the Spartans.Â
Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) earned the win, working 6.0 innings, allowing 8 runs on 13 hits, striking out 8 and walking 1.Â
Jake Black (Bethlehem, PA/Elizabethtown Area ) worked the final 3.0 innings, allowing 3 runs (none earned) on 4 hits with 3 K's.Â
The win moves the 8th ranked Spartans to 32-8 overall, while Lackawanna falls to 22-16.Â
The Spartans return to action at Spartan Park on Wednesday when they host Union County College in a weekday doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1pm.Â
