NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The 6th ranked Northampton men's basketball extended their winning streak to 10 games with a hard-fought 65-60 road victory over Monroe-Bronx (Region 15) on Sunday afternoon at the MAC.
The Express, winners of 7 straight, and the Spartans, went toe to toe for 40 minutes, with Monroe holding a 7-point lead, 7 minutes into the contest, and the Spartans taking a 12-point advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Express retook the lead at 58-57 with 4:24 remaining on a Jasigha Barnes layup, but the Spartans were able to battle back and hold off Monroe down the stretch for the victory.Â
Titus Wilkins (Easton, PA/Executive Education Academy Charter) led the way for Northampton with 18 points, including a layup with 1:17 to play that put the Spartans up 63-60.Â
Tyrese Fuller (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) added 13 points and 9 rebounds, and
Mike Marable (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.Â
"This is one of our best road victories," remarked Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "Monroe is very talented, well-coached, and it is a tough venue to play in ... I'm just really proud of how the guys performed today."
The win moves Northampton to 19-2 overall, while Monroe-Bronx falls to 16-9.Â
Things don't get any easier for the Spartans when they return home to the Arthur L. Scott Center on Tuesday January 31st, as they will host nationally-ranked Montgomery County Community College at 7pm.
"This is why you come to Northampton," stated McCarthy, "to play in big games against quality opponents ... we will enjoy this one today and get back to work tomorrow preparing for a very good MontCo team."
