Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenburg) converted two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to give the Northampton women's basketball team a 52-51 victory over 13th ranked RCSJ-Gloucester on Thursday evening at the RAC.
In a back and forth affair, Day was able to knock down two free throws when it mattered most, after the Spartans had struggled from the charity stripe all night, finishing 12 of 26 (46%). Day finished with 12 points, including a 6 for 10 performance at the line.
Zoe Cruz (Swiftwater, PA/Pocono Mt. East) led the Spartans with 14 points, while
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) and
Shanaiya Ellis (Allentown, PA/William Allen) each chipped in with 8.
"This is a big win for us," remarked Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "we needed a signature win on our resume, and now we have one. Hopefully this provides us with some momentum heading into the postseason."
The win, Northampton's 4th consecutive, moves the Spartans to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in Region 19.
The 13th ranked Roadrunners fall to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in Region play.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Lions at 12pm. The Spartans can clinch their 2nd consecutive EPAC Championship with a victory.
