TRENTON, NJ - The Northampton softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader vs. Mercer County Community College on Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-2 in game one and 8-3 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE - Lost 3-2
In game one the Spartans scored 2 runs in the top of the 3rd, as
Lauren Wehr (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East) walked, followed by a
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) single.
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) then singled, and Wehr tried to score, but got caught in a rundown, which resulted in an error by the Vikings, allowing Wehr and Reed to score.
The Spartans led 2-0 entering the bottom of the 6th, but Bella Truelove, the GSAC Player of the Week, hit a solo homerun to cut the margin to 2-1 and then the Vikings manufactured the tying run with a hit by pitch, single, walk and a fielder's choice.
The game remained tied entering the bottom of the 7th, when Truelove hit a walk-off homerun to give the Vikings the dramatic 3-2 victory.
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor) took the loss in relief of
Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville), throwing 1.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit.
Reed, Schillo,
Kara Wilson (Bethlehem, PA/Nazareth) and
Destiny Koppenhaver (Bethlehem, PA/Commonwealth Charter) accounted for Northampton's 4 hits.
GAME TWO - Lost 8-3
Mercer jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after 3 innings and coasted to the 8-3 win in game two.
Northampton was able to create some offense in the 4th inning, as
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor) doubled,
Kara Wilson (Bethlehem, PA/Nazareth) walked,
Morgan Rissmiller (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) singled, loading the bases.
Bridget Pavelko (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Klingle.
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) then singled, scoring Wilson to make it 7-2 Mercer.
The Spartans added a run in the 6th, as Chelsea Markowits led off with a walk and eventually scored on a single from Karc.
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) and
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) each went 2 for 4, while Karc finished with 2 RBI.
Theresa Luongo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the loss, working 2.0 innings, allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits.
Reggie Bangcoro (Easton, PA/Easton) finished the game, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) over the the final 4.0 innings with 3 strikeouts.
The losses drop Northampton to 5-5 overall, while Mercer improves to 11-3.
The Spartans are scheduled to be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Scranton, PA to face Division II Lackawanna College at 3:30pm.
