BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 2nd seeded Northampton women's basketball team captured the Region 19 / North Atlantic District Championship on Saturday afternoon, downing #4 Camden County College, 51-40, to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Rochester, MN.
The Spartans, who trailed by 10 points in the 2nd quarter, rallied to take a 1-point lead by halftime and then outscored the Cougars 26-16 in the second half to earn the second national tournament appearance in program history (2012).
Northampton held Camden to 19.4% shooting from the field and forced 26 turnovers to win the defensive-minded championship game.
"I am so happy for our girls and our coaching staff," stated Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "we were able to regroup after a tough 1st quarter and pull-away in the second half. I am very lucky to be part of such a great program. I want to tip my hat to Camden ... they are relentless and well coached."
Kania Day (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) led Northampton with 13 points, while
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenburg) added 12.
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) earned MVP honors, hauling down 17 rebounds to go along with 4 points and 2 assists.
Bomar was named the Region 19 Coach of the Year.
Northampton, now 20-6 overall, will now advance to the NJCAA Division III Women's National Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota, March 15-18.
Camden finishes the season at 22-7 overall.
