Spartans Fall in North Atlantic District Championship Series

SEWELL, NJ - The 3rd seeded Northampton softball team saw their season come to close on Sunday afternoon in the North Atlantic District Championship, falling to 2nd seeded RCSJ-Gloucester 2-1 in extra innings in game one and 5-2 in game two, to drop the best of three series, two games to none. 

GAME ONE - Lost 2-1 (8 innings)
In game one the Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st, as Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) singled, Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) doubled and Reed scored on a ground-out from Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge)

The 1-0 lead held up until the bottom of the 7th when Morgan Fitzpatrick hit a solo homerun for the Roadrunners to tie the contest at 1-1 and send it to extra innings. 

The Spartans could not score in the top of the 8th, but the Roadrunners pieced together two hits and a sacrifice bunt to score the winning run in the bottom of the 8th to earn the 2-1 victory. 

Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville) took the loss, going 7.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and no walks.

Reed finished 3 for 4 with a run scored, Schillo was 2 for 4 and Bridget Pavelko (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) went 1 for 3 to pace the offense. 

GAME TWO - Lost 5-2
In the second game, the Roadrunners took a 2-0 lead in the 4th on 2 hits, an error and a walk. 

Northampton responded in the top of the 5th as Destiny Koppenhaver (Bethlehem, PA/Commonwealth Charter) led off with a double, Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township (NJ)) reached on an error, scoring Koppenhaver to cut the deficit to 2-1.  Melkowits advanced to second base and then scored on a ground ball from Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) to tie the game at 2-2. 

Gloucester strung together 3 hits in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 1 run, to take back the lead at 3-2.

The Roadrunners put the game away in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-run homerun to take a 5-2 lead. 

Theresa Luongo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the loss in relief of Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor), working 1.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits with 1 K and 1 walk.  Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville) finished the contest, working the final 1.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 K's.  Klingle pitched the first 3 innings, allowing no runs on 4 hits. 

Melkowits finished 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and 1 run scored and Reggie Bangcoro (Easton, PA/Easton) was 2 for 2 with a double. 

The Spartans finish the season at 24-12. 

RCSJ-Gloucester improves to 37-13 and advances to the NJCAA World Series in Syracuse, NY, May 24-27.
