BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton baseball team swept games two and three of their Region 19 series with Bergen Community College, winning 7-6 and 13-4 on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Park. The Spartans won game one on Friday afternoon in Paramus, NJ with 4 runs in the 9th to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
GAME TWO - Won 7-6
The Spartans once again used that 9th inning magic, scoring 2 runs to overcome a 6-5 deficit and defeat Bergen 7-6.
Brandon Ratti (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) started the rally with a one-out triple, followed by a walk from
Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall).
Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) then smashed a walk-off double to give Northampton their second consecutive 9th inning comeback victory.
Bergen scored 3 runs in the 2nd to take the early lead, but the Spartans responded with 2 in the bottom half of the inning, as
Stephen McMillan (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks - South) doubled and then scored on a
Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) single. Caso then scored on a
Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) single, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After the Bulldogs added a run in the 3rd, to go up 4-2, Northampton scored 3 uns in the 4th to take the lead at 5-4.
Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) drew a walk and
Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) reached on an error, putting runners on 1st and 2nd.
Alex Kok (Ontario, Canada/Dr. John M Denison Secondary) then laced a double, scoring both Caso and Herman. Kok then scored on a RBI double from
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)).
The Bulldogs added a run in the 5th and a run in the 6th to retake the lead at 6-5, setting the stage for Northampton's 9th inning rally.
Ethan Woods (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) earned the win, throwing a complete game (7 innings), allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits, striking out 6 and walking 3.
Herman finished 2 for 3 with a RBI, Kok was 1 for 3 with a run scored and 2 RBI and
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)) went 1 for 3 with a double and a RBI.
GAME THREE - Won 13-4
Game three of the series proved to be drama free, as the Spartans scored 3 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd and cruised to a 13-4 victory.
Daniel McEvoy (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) improved to 3-0 on the year with 6 innings of work, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits with 3 K's and 1 walk.
Matt Burnett (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) worked the 7th inning in relief, striking out 2.
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan (NJ)) paced the offense with a 3 for 4 performance, including a double and 2 RBI,
Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) was 1 for 2 with a triple, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI,
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)) smashed a solo homerun and
Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored, a RBI and 3 stolen bases.
The doubleheader sweep improves Northampton to 26-13 overall and 12-11 in Region 19.
Bergen falls to 17-24 overall and 6-19 in Region play.
The Spartans return to the diamond on Sunday when they host Montgomery County Community College in a doubleheader, first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12pm.
