Spartans Sweep Montgomery, Extend Win Streak to 6

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 14th ranked Northampton baseball team extended their winning streak to 6 games with a doubleheader sweep of in-state rival Montgomery County Community College on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Park. 

GAME ONE - Won 7-4
In game one, the floodgates opened quickly for the Spartans, as they scored 4 runs in the 1st inning.  Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) singled and then scored from 1st base on a double from Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall)Luke Spencer (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) then lined a single which scored Fillman, putting Northampton up 2-0.  Spencer advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball, putting Northampton up 3-0.  Northampton's 4th run came when Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) drew a walk and then scored on a RBI double from Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond).

The Spartans added a run in the 2nd as Sabater doubled, advanced to 3rd on a single from Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan (NJ)) and then scored on a single from Spencer. 

Montgomery manufactured 4 runs in the 3rd, cutting the margin to 5-4 entering the 4th. 

Northampton got a run in the 4th to go up 6-4, as Fillman doubled with two outs and scored on a single from Spencer.

Ryan Mottley (Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) added an insurance run in the 5th with a solo homerun to right field, giving Northampton a 7-4 lead.

Luke Spencer (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) finished 4 for 4 with 3 RBI, Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. and Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.

Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) earned the win with 6 innings of work, allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, striking out 8 and walking 4.  Ethan Ferraro (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) pitched a scoreless 7th, striking out 2. 

GAME TWO - Won 18-9
Game two featured 33 hits and 27 runs combined, with the Spartans doubling up the Mustangs on the scoreboard, 18-9. 

Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) was 3 for 3 with 3-run homerun, Stephen McMillan (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks - South) went 4 for 5 with a double and 3 runs scored, Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) finished 2 for 3 with a homerun and 3 RBI and Luke Spencer (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) was 2 for 5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI to pace the Spartan offense.

Three Spartan pitchers saw time on the mound, with Tyler Sharayko (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) earning the win.  Sharayko went 5 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits with 3 K's.  Jagger Martinez (Newport Beach, CA/Rockwall-Heath (TX)) threw 1 inning of relief, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs.  Matthew Burnett (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) closed out a scoreless 7th with 2 strikeouts. 

The wins move Northampton to 28-13 overall and 14-11 in Region 19.

Mongtomery falls to 0-9 in Region 19 and 13-14 overall. 

The Spartans continue their homestand on Monday when the host Ocean in the final game of their Region 19 series, which is tied at one game apiece.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
