MEDIA, Pa. - Delaware County Community College converted a penalty kick with 10 seconds remaining in the game to break a 3-3 tie and earn a 4-3 victory over the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon at Phantom Field.
The Spartans, who led 2-0 at halftime, saw their lead disappear in the second half as Michael Haley took control of the contest, scoring 3 goals and handing out an assist, as the Delaware rallied for their first win over Northampton since October 15, 2019.
"We went into halftime up 2-0 and then in the second half we never got that killer instinct," remarked Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "we let them hang around and when they cut it to 2-1, you could feel the momentum swing ... we just didn't play with the same energy and motivation for the second 45 minutes."
Delaware tied the contest at 2-2 in the second half with about 20 minutes to play. 5 minutes later the Spartans responded as
Elijah Ejiofor (Gonesse, France/Pocono Mt. West) scored his 2nd goal of the afternoon on a feed from
Wisdom Ntona (Johannesburg, South Africa/Queens), putting Northampton up 3-2.
The Phantoms tied the game at the 7 minute mark when Abdul Sheriff scored off an assist from Michael Haley to make it 3-3.
The two foes would battle back and forth over the final 7 minutes, until the Spartans were called for a foul inside the box with just 10 seconds remaining in the contest. Michael Haley calmly converted the kick for the 4-3 upset victory.
Omar Zatar (Paterson, NJ/Pocono Mt. West) finished with 4 saves in the goal for Northampton.
The loss drops Northampton to 5-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in Region 19.
Delaware improves to 4-4-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the Region.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they host Montgomery County Community College at 4pm.
