BRANCHBURG, NJ - The Northampton women's volleyball team traveled across state lines on Thursday evening to take on Region 19 rival Raritan Valley Community College. In what has proven to be a headline event over the past several seasons, tonight was just as expected, a 5-set thriller, with the Golden Lions avenging an earlier loss to Northampton, topping the Spartans, 3-2.
Raritan Valley took set 1, 25-23, with the Spartans answering right back with a 25-17 win in the second set, evening the match at, 1-1. RVCC took a convincing win in the 3rd set, 25-16, and Northampton again answered with a 25-19 win in the 4th set to tie things up at, 2-2, setting the stage for a 5th and deciding set. Raritan Valley was able to hold off the Spartans with a 15-11 win in the 5th set to secure the win and hand the Spartans the tough luck loss.
Alyssa Eilenberger (Saylorsburg, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) led the Spartans with 13 kills and 14 digs.
Lexi Womack (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) added 10 kills, 2 aces and 25 digs to help pace the Spartans.
Mackenzie Davis (Warsaw, VA/Rappahannock (VA)) recorded 28 digs and 4 service aces.
Northampton falls to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in Region 19.
RVCC improves to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in Region 19.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Community College of Philadelphia to take part in a tri-match with Philadelphia and Montgomery County Community College.
