BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 4th ranked Northampton baseball team took game one of their 3-game Region 19 series vs. Middlesex College on Tuesday afternoon, downing the Colts 10-1.
Ben Mostosky (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) earned his 3rd win of the season, allowing just 1 unearned run on 7 hits, striking out 4, in 6 innings of work.
Mason Sgarlat (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) threw the final 4 innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 6.
Robert Furino (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East) hit a 2-run homerun in the 5th inning, as the Spartans scored 5 runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
Alexander Ruiz (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) finished 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and a stolen base,
John Smale (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) was 2 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and
Peter Hrousis (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) added a homerun in the 8th to pace the Spartan offense.
"Great effort today, the guys were locked in from the first pitch," commented Head Coach Adrian Yaguez, "now the task is keep that focus on the road for 14 innings on Wednesday."
The win moves Northampton to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in Region 19.
Middlesex, which received votes (RV) in the latest NJCAA poll, falls to 12-9 overall and 3-4 in the Region.
The two foes will be back at it on Wednesday in Edison, New Jersey for games two and three of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
