Top Ranked Spartans Down Lehigh Carbon in Extra Innings

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa -- The #1 ranked Northampton baseball team completed the series sweep over cross-town rival Lehigh Carbon on Tuesday afternoon, downing the Cougars 15-12 at Stabler Field in 10 innings.The victory completes the series sweep as the Spartans won the first two games of the 3-game series on Saturday at Spartan Field 10-0 and 11-2. The Spartans are now 21-0 all-time vs. Lehigh Carbon.

Cody Miller (Oxford, NJ/Warren Hills (NJ)) delivered the big hit for the Spartans in extra innings, blasting a bases clearing triple to center field which scored three runs, putting the Spartans up for good, 15-12.

The Spartans used four pitchers on the mound. Ellis Snow (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief and picked up with win, improving to 4-0 on the season. Austin Beard (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) shut the door in the bottom of the 10th with a scoreless inning of work for the save.

The Spartan offense scored 15 runs on 16 hits. Luis Beato (Bethlehem, PA/Muhlenberg) was 3-6 with 2 runs scored,  pair of doubles and a stolen base. Robert Furino (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East) was 3-5 with 2 runs scored and Gabriel Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris (NJ)) collected 3 hits, going 3-6 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and a stolen base. Miller, who delivered the big blow in the top of the 10th with the bases clearing triple, finished 1-1 with 3 RBI.

The Spartans improve to 32-4 overall and 20-3 in Region 19.

Lehigh Carbon falls to 8-16 overall. 

The Spartans are back on the field this Friday when they travel to Vineland, NJ to take on the Cumberland Dukes in game 1 of their 3 game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
