Softball Falls to NJCAA Division II Mercer

BETHLEHEM, Pa -- The 10th ranked Spartans dropped a doubleheader to NJCAA Division II Mercer County Community College on Thursday afternoon, falling 17-7 and 9-1 at Spartan Field.

GAME ONE - Lost 17-7 
The Vikings offense jumped to an early lead and never looked back as they used an 18 hit attack to fuel the win. The Spartans trailed 11-3 after three innings and attempted to battle back with 4 runs in the 4th inning but it just was not enough. The Vikings sealed the win with a 5 run outburst in the top of the 6th. The Spartan offense put together a solid 10 hits in the loss. Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) led the way with a 2-3 effort which included 3 RBI and her 1st home run of the season. Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) was 2-4 with an RBI and Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) was 2-2 with 2 runs scored and a pair of doubles. Morgan Boyd (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) was 1-3 with a double and RBI.

Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the loss on the mound and falls to 0-4. Luongo fired 3 innings, allowing 12 hits. Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) pitched the final three frames, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits.

GAME TWO - Lost 9-1 (5 Innings)
The Vikings broke open a 3-1 game in the top of the 5th inning with 6 runs to seal the win. The Vikings offense pounded out 13 hits which included 3 consecutive home runs in the final frame. 

The Spartans were only able to manage 3 hits in the non-conference loss. Morgan Rissmiller (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) went 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) finished 1-1 with a double and a RBI

The Spartans slip to 12-6 overall. The Vikings improve to 31-5 and extend their winning streak to 17 straight wins.

The Spartans are back on Spartan Field this Saturday when they host RCSJ-Gloucester in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12pm.
