SEWELL, NJ - The 4th seeded Northampton softball team saw their season come to an end on Monday afternoon, as the Spartans fell to 2nd seeded Middlesex, 10-2, in an elimination game in the Region 19 tournament.
The Spartans, who dropped their opener on Saturday to top-seeded RCSJ-Gloucester, found themselves down early to the Colts, trailing 2-0 after the 1st inning. Northampton rallied and tied the game at 2-2 with 2 runs in the top of the 4th, highlighted by a
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) 2-run triple. Middlesex then responded with 8 runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-2 lead and then held the Spartans scoreless in the top of the 5th for the run-rule shortened victory.
Schillo finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBI,
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) was 2 for 3 with a run scored and
Shana Gugliandolo (Allentown, PA/Parkland) went 1 for 3 with a run scored to lead Northampton.
Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the loss, going 3.0 innings, allowing 6 runs.
Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) threw the final inning, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits.
The Spartans finish the 2024 campaign at 20-14, ranked 8th in the last NJCAA poll.
