NEWTON, NJ - The 8th ranked Northampton softball team picked up a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Sussex County Community College on Thursday afternoon, downing the Skylanders 17-2 in game one and 17-4 in game two.
GAME ONE - Won 17-2
In the game one run-rule shortened victory, the Spartans pounded out 19 hits, led by
Shana Gugliandolo (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) each with 4 hits and
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) who hit 2 homeruns and collected 5 RBI. Gugliandolo's 4-hit day included a triple, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored, while Karc totaled 5 RBI and a double.
Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) went the distance in the circle, allowing just 2 runs over 5 innings, scattering 7 hits and striking out 4.
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) added 2 hits, including a double, and scored 4 runs.
GAME TWO - Won 17-4
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) continued to swing a hot bat in game two, finishing 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI and
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) continued her power surge with 2 doubles and 2 RBI in her 3 for 5 performance.
Morgan Rissmiller (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) had a double and 3 RBI and
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) got the win, with a 7 inning complete game, striking out 7, giving up 7 hits and allowing 4 runs (3 earned).
The Spartans improve to 18-12 overall.
Sussex falls to 5-23.
Northampton is now off until Monday May 6th when they will host Lehigh Carbon in a rescheduled contest. Saturday's doubleheader vs. the Cougars will now be played on Monday, with first pitch set for 3:30pm.
