Spartans Down Delaware for 3rd Straight Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team picked up their 3rd consecutive victory, downing Delaware County Community College, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Soccer Complex.

Kaden Dowd (Bangor, PA/Bangor) opened the scoring for Northampton, converting a corner kick from Elijah Ejiofor (Gonesse, France/Pocono Mt. West), to put the Spartans up 1-0 at the 18 minute mark.

5 minutes later, Ejiofor was fouled in the box and Gershon Bangura (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle) converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Northampton a 2-0 lead.

The Phantoms then got on the board at the 26 minute mark, as Lawrence Buigbo scored on a penalty kick to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1.

The Spartans regained a 2-goal lead at the 36 minute mark as Nicolas Arevalo (Bogota, Columbia/Pleasant Valley) found Bangura with a pinpoint pass, which Bangura deposited into the back of the DCCC net, giving Northanpton a 3-1 lead, which they carried into halftime.

Delaware trimmed the deficit to 3-2 at the 63 minute mark, as Abdul Sheriff scored off a direct kick, heading the ball past Spartan goaltender Omar Zatar (Paterson, NJ/Pocono Mt. West)

Northampton then rattled off the final two tallies of the game, with Elijah Ejiofor (Gonesse, France/Pocono Mt. West) scoring at the 80 minute mark and Kaden Dowd (Bangor, PA/Bangor) adding his second goal of the day just 1:27 later.

Zatar finished with 3 saves for Northampton.

"I was really pleased with our defense today," commented Head Coach Mario Barrantes, "Cael Anderko (Bath, PA/Northampton), Hayden Burns (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and Christian Martinez (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central (NJ)) were physical and did a great job shutting down the DCCC attack."

Northampton moves to 3-1-0 overall with the victory.

Delaware, which has lost 6 straight to Northampton, falls to 2-2-0.

The Spartans return to the pitch on Tuesday when they travel across the Valley to face Lehigh Carbon Community College at 4pm.
