Spartans Fall to Nationally-Ranked Sussex

NEWTON, NJ - The Northampton men's soccer team saw their 6-game unbeaten streak come to end, as 9th ranked Sussex County Community College downed the Spartans 5-1 on Thursday afternoon at Skylander field.

Sussex took a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game, as they played a long ball over the defense that Ryan Evans deposited into the Spartan goal.

The Skylanders went up 2-0 just 30 seconds later when Alessandro Aquilino drilled a shot from 25 yards out that beat Spartan goaltender Omar Zatar (Paterson, NJ/Pocono Mt. West).

Gino Suprano's direct kick put Sussex up 3-0 at the 17 minute mark.

32 minutes into the contest the Spartans were able to get on the board, as national player of the week Elijah Ejiofor (Gonesse, France/Pocono Mt. West) found Kaden Dowd (Bangor, PA/Bangor), who drilled a low shot to the corner, to cut the deficit to 3-1.

After the intermission, the Skylanders regained momentum and took control of the contest for the final 45 minutes, adding two more goals to make the final 5-1.

Zatar finished with 6 saves for Northampton.

The loss drops the Spartans to 5-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Region 19.

The 9th ranked Skylanders improve to 6-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Region.

Northampton returns to action on Tuesday October 1st when they travel to Media, PA to face Delaware County Community College.
