Spartans Take Down 7th Ranked Union County College

CRANFORD, NJ -  The 15th ranked Northampton men's basketball team upended 7th ranked Union County College on Saturday afternoon, downing the Owls 77-70 in overtime, at the Union Athletic Center.

In a very evenly played contest, the Spartans outscored Union 11 to 4 in the extra stanza to earn the Region 19 victory, sending the Owls to their first Region loss of the season.

Northampton finished with 26 made field goals, 5 3-pointers and was 20 of 31 from the line, while Union made 25 shots, 6 from downtown and converted 14 of 20 from the charity stripe.

"This is a big win for us," stated Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "first and foremost, Union is a very good team, so to come here against the #7 team in the country and get a win in this gym, which may be the most difficult place to play in the Region, is very gratifying."

Abdul Jackson (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) led the Spartans with 23 points, followed by Josh Washington (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) with 16, Lamaj Mapp (Darby, PA/Penn Wood) with 13 and Nate Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/LIberty) with 11.

The Spartans improve to 22-5 overall and finish 14-4 in Region 19.

Union falls to 19-4 overall and 15-1 in Region play.

Northampton will now await the seeding for the upcoming Region 19 / North Atlantic District Tournament, which is set to start on Saturday February 22nd.
