BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 10th ranked Northampton softball team split their Region 19 doubleheader vs. 9th ranked Brookdale on Saturday at Spartan Field, dropping game one 3-0 and then taking game two 12-7.
GAME ONE - Lost 3-0
Brookdale's Jules Hart tossed a 4-hit shutout in game one, striking out 8, as the Jersey Blues topped Northampton, 3-0.
Morgan Boyd (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South),
Molly Devers (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty),
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and
Katie Knecht (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) each had one hit, but the Spartans struggled to string together any hits to manufacture runs.
"We had a couple chances, but we weren't able to move runners," remarked Head Coach
Eric Kutteroff, "it was a well-played game on both sides."
Emma Kozy (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) took the hard-luck loss, going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits, while striking out 4 and walking none.
GAME TWO - Won 12-7
After only getting 4 hits in game one, the Spartans pounded out 15 hits in game two, downing the Jersey Blues 12-7.
Mya Frana (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI and
Jenna Geiger (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.
Leading 8-7 in the 6th,
Katie Knecht (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) singled, knocking in two runs to give the Spartans a 10-7 lead. Frana then tripled, scoring two more runs, giving the Spartans a 5-run cushion heading into the 7th inning.
Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) got the win in relief, going 2 innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit, striking out 4.
The split puts Northampton at 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the Region.
Brookdale moves to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in Region play.
The Spartans are off until Saturday March 22nd when they host Ocean County College in a Region 19 doubleheader starting at 12pm.
