SEWELL, NJ - The Northampton softball team lost in the Region 19 championship game on Sunday afternoon to top-seeded RCSJ-Gloucester, falling 4-3 to the Roadrunners.
The Spartans advanced to the championship with a 13-1 victory over Middlesex on Sunday morning, after working through the losers bracket on Saturday.
GAME ONE vs. #3 Middlesex - WON 13-1
The Spartans put 4 runs across the plate in the top of the 1st and never looked back in downing Middlesex College, 13-1, in a rule-rule shorted contest to advance to the Region 19 Championship game.
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) got the win in the circle, going 5.0 innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 run (0 earned) while striking out 5.
The Spartans totaled 19 hits in the win, with 5 players each getting 3 hits.
Jenna Geiger (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and 3 RBI,
Katie Knecht (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and 3 RBI and
Maggie Pagotto (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) finished 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
GAME TWO vs. #1 RCSJ-Gloucester - Lost 4-3
In the Region 19 championship game, the Spartans and Roadrunners batted for 7 innings, with RCSJ-Gloucester scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th to earn the 4-3 victory.
Emma Kozy (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) took the hard-luck loss, throwing a complete game, allowing 4 runs (3 earned), scattering 6 hits while striking out 1.
Emily Childs got the win for the Roadrunners, going 7.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, striking out 5 Spartans.
Katie Knecht (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) had 2 hits and 2 RBI, while
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and
Molly Devers (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) each finished 2 for 4.
Grace Gallagher of RCSJ-Gloucester was named MVP of the Tournament, going 2 for 3 with a homerun in the championship game.
The Spartans, who are still in the running for an at-large to the NJCAA Tournament in Syracuse, NY, fall to 20-12 overall.
The Roadrunners, who earn an automatic bid to the national tournament, are now 33-10.
