Spartans Improve to 3-0 with Wins Over Genesee and #11 Nassau

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's volleyball team cruised to a pair of 3-0 wins on Saturday at the Arthur L. Scott Center, defeating Genesee Community College (NY) and the 11th ranked Lions of Nassau Community College (NY). The two wins move the Spartans, who received votes in the latest NJCAA national poll, to 3-0. .Nassau defeated Genesee earlier in the day and finished the tri match at 1-1. Genesee falls to 0-2 with both losses.

Match One
Genesee Community College - Won 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-21)

The Spartans topped Genesee Community College to open the day as Lexi Womack (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) continued her strong play with a team high 11 kills, 3 service aces and 5 digs for the Spartans. Freshman Sophia Tyma (Bethlehem, PA/Lehigh Valley Academy) added 8 kills and 2 blocks and 8 block assists,  while Zoe Velez (Landville, PA/Warwick) collected 5 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks.

Sophomore Setter Samantha Nagy (Easton, PA/Easton) had 24 assists, 2 service aces and 12 digs and Gianna Sciarra (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) collected a team high 5 aces and 14 digs.

Northampton improved to 2-0 to start the season, while Genesee slips to 0-1 with the season opening loss,

Match Two
Nassau Community College - Won 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-21)

The Spartans continued their momentum and strong play into their second match of the day, dropping the 11th ranked Lions of Nassau in 3 sets. The win avenges a 3-1 loss to the Lions from a year ago, when the Spartans hosted the two foes in a season opening tri match. The Spartans are now 3-2 all time versus the Lions.

Sophia Tyma (Bethlehem, PA/Lehigh Valley Academy) had a career high 12 kills along with 2 solo blocks to lead the Spartan offense. Lexi Womack (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) recorded 8 kills, 2 service aces and 13 digs, while Grace Coppola (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) chipped in with 5 kills, 4 aces, 3 aces and 2 block assists. Samantha Nagy (Easton, PA/Easton) collected 26 assists and 10 digs with Gianna Sciarra (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) notching 15 digs.

"Today was a good early season test and I felt our team responded well," remarked Head Coach Rachael Aquila, "it's still early, but I like where we are and how the team is coming together ... we will get back to work after the weekend."

The Spartans are now 3-0 overall and will be back on the floor on Wednesday, September 3rd in the Arthur L. Scott Center, opening Region 19 play against Harrisburg Area Community College at 6pm.
