SEWELL, NJ - The Northampton men's soccer team fell just short with a 2-1 setback against RCSJ-Gloucester on Saturday afternoon at the Roadrunners Soccer Complex. The Spartans led 1-0 after the first half, but held scoreless the rest of the way, as the Roadrunners answered with two second half scores to deliver the hard luck loss.
Freshman Midfielder
Santiago Rivas (Pereira, Columbia/Liceo Euroamericano) put the Spartans on the board when he took a lead pass from
Joseph Gbenda (Upper Chichester, PA/Chichester) in the 43rd minute, drilling the back of the net for his 3rd goal of the season and the 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners tallied their second half scores in the 72nd and 83rd minute to seal the win. Spartan Goalie
Theo Jenkins (Phillipsburg, NJ/Nazareth) recorded 6 saves.
"Great start right out of the gate," explained Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "It was a back and forth match up the entire game, our kids played hard, but allowing the two second half scores was the difference. We just need to find a way to put it together for 90 minutes. That was the story. Tough loss but I am proud of our effort."
Northampton falls to 0-5-0 overall and 0-5-0 in Region 19.
RCSJ-Gloucester improves to 4-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Region.
The Spartans will be back on the pitch Tuesday for a Region 19 match up when they host the Phantoms of Delaware County Community College at 4pm.
