BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Men's Soccer team struggled to get any type of momentum going on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-1 to Bergen in a Region 19 match up at Spartan Field.
The Spartans fell behind just over one minute into the contest when Bergen converted on a breakaway for an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 before freshman forward
Mohamed Hassanali (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) hit the back of the net for an unassisted score for the Spartans, cutting the margin to 3-1.
Bergen added two more scores before the end of the half for the 5-1 lead at intermission. The Spartans were held scoreless in the second half as Bergen added a pair of goals for the 7-1 win.
Noah Dergham (Bouar, Lebanon/Antonine Sisters) recorded 7 saves in goal for the Spartans.
"We fell behind early again and put ourselves in a tough spot right from the start," explained Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "We need to find a way to get some momentum early and build some confidence. It is tough to keep battling from behind."
The Spartans fall to 0-6-1 overall and 0-6-1 in Region 19.
Bergen improves to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the Region.
The Spartans are off until next Thursday, September 25th when the host the Jersey Blues of Brookdale at 4pm.
