BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team fell, 2-1, in a non-region tilt against visiting Harrisburg Area Community College on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Spartans and Hawks battled through a defensive first half and were knotted, 0-0, at the intermission.
Harrisburg broke the scoreless deadlock with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute of the second half to take the lead over the Spartans, 1-0.
Northampton answered 6 minutes later when sophomore
Cole Garber (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) was able to come through on a penalty kick, making the score, 1-1.
Harrisburg answered immediately, putting the ball into the net past Spartans goalkeeper
Martin Severo (Allentown, PA/William Allen), giving the Hawks the, 2-1, edge with what proved to be the game winning goal.
"We battled today and just came up short," said Spartans Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "I felt we were starting to get some momentum in the second half and Harrisburg was able to get one in the net and that hurt. We answered with the penalty kick and that got us even, but we gave it right back, and that was it. Tough loss. I felt we played well today."
The Spartans fall to 4-8-2 overall with the non-region loss. Harrisburg Area Community College is now 1-5-1.
Northampton wraps up their regular season on Saturday, October 17th when they host Atlantic Cape Community College at 12pm in region 19 action at Spartan Field.
