Women's Basketball Falls in OT to Brookdale, 65-63

LINCROFT, NJ - The Northampton women's basketball team fell in overtime, 65-63, to host Brookdale Community College in a Region 19 clash on Monday evening at the Collins Arena.

Northampton and Brookdale faced off Saturday, with the Spartans falling short, 73-70, and collided again on Monday night in a rescheduled cancellation due to inclement weather on January 27th.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick, 10-0, lead on the Jersey Blues and held off a late surge by the home team to hold on to a, 17-16, edge at the end of the first quarter. The Spartans were unable to stop the Jersey Blues momentum and found themselves trailing at the half, 33-28.

The Spartans were able to take control in the third quarter, limiting the Jersey Blues to just 3 points, and regaining the lead, 41-36. Turnovers cost the Spartans, as they were unable to hold their lead in the fourth quarter, and with 3 minutes remaining, the score was tied, 50-50. The Spartans were down, 55-53, with 8.9 seconds remaining, when Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) gave the Spartans life when she banked a layup to tie the score at, 55-55, and sent the game to overtime.

Both teams traded baskets during the overtime period, with the Jersey Blues taking a, 65-63, lead with under a minute remaining. Northampton was able to get a steal and a quick timeout, and with 1.9 seconds showing on the clock, had time for one more opportunity. The Spartans were able to get the ball to Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen), who was able to hit a quick jump shot, but the basket was ruled to be after time had expired, and the Spartans fell short with the tough overtime loss.

"Felt we got off to a good start with the 10-0 run but we just let it slip away," explained Spartans Head Coach Carly Gallagher, "Give Brookdale credit. They battled us all night and we just had too many costly turnovers and couldn't overcome the mistakes. We can't dwell on this. We have to get ready to get back on the floor tomorrow."

Neoshe Perez (Bath, PA/Executive Charter) led the Spartans with 15 points and 8 rebounds while Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Abymarie Colon (Easton, PA/Wilson) scored 10 points with two steals.

Northampton falls to 17-8 overall and 11-6 in Region 19.

Brookdale improves to 13-11 overall and 9-8 in the Region.

The Spartans will look to close out the regular season on Tuesday night when they travel to Blackwood, NJ to take on Camden County College in Region 19 action at 5pm at the Joseph Papiano Gymnasium.
