Spartans Zip Past Ranked RCSJ-Gloucester, 72-59

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Northampton Women's Basketball team put together a strong second-half of Basketball to zip past and upset nationally ranked RCSJ-Gloucester, 72-59, on Tuesday evening in a Region 19 match-up at the Arthur L. Scott Center.

The Spartans and visiting Roadrunners, who Received Votes in the most recent NJCAA national poll, battled through the first half of Basketball with both teams trading leads and momentum. The Spartans held a 12-11 edge after the first quarter of play with the Roadrunners regaining the lead, 26-24, going into the intermission.

The Spartans took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 23-12, and holding a 47-38 edge going into the final frame. Northampton managed to put the game away in the fourth quarter, out scoring RCSJ-Gloucester 25-21 and cruising down the stretch to the upset victory.

"Great effort and win tonight," explained Spartans Head Coach Carly Gallagher, "We knew we had to bounce back after some recent tough losses and our kids responded. We needed this and I am extremely proud with how we competed tonight."

Sophomore guard Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen) led all scorers with a game high 29 points with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Sweatte was also 4-9 from three point range. Neoshe Perez (Bath, PA/Executive Charter) recorded the double-double with 15 points and 13 boards while Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) chipped in with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Abymarie Colon (Easton, PA/Wilson) scored 7 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for the Spartans.

Northampton improves to 14-6 overall and 9-4 in Region 19.

RCSJ-Gloucester is now 14-6 overall and 9-4 in the Region.

The Spartans are back in action this Thursday when they host Bergen Community College at 5pm at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
