MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Northampton Baseball team went 1-1 on Day Four of their Spring Trip, defeating NJCAA DII St. Clair County Community College, 5-2, and losing to NJCAA DII Westmoreland County Community College, 11-6, on a busy Tuesday at the Ripken Experience.
GAME ONE vs ST. CLAIR COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Won 5-2)
The Spartans rode the arm of sophomore pitcher
Jared Diefenbach (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) (1-0) in their first game on Tuesday morning, as the big righty picked up the win with a complete game effort, scattering 4 hits and striking out 9 batters in 7 innings of work.
Trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Spartans got things going when
Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) singled to lead off the inning and
Kyle Stoner (Burlington Township (NJ)/Burlington Township (NJ)) followed with a 2-run home run to left field to put the Spartans on top, 3-2.
Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) followed with a single to center field, stole second base, and came around to score on an RBI single by
Aiden Pearson (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) to put the Spartans ahead, 4-2.
Northampton added some insurance in the bottom of the 5th inning when
Lukas Cokely (Montrose, PA/Montrose) drew a bases loaded walk to score a run and extend the lead for the Spartans, 5-2.
Kyle Stoner (Burlington Township (NJ)/Burlington Township (NJ)) was 1-2 with a home run and 2 RBI.
Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) was 2-2 with a double, stolen base, and two runs scored.
Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 2-3 with a stolen base.
GAME TWO vs WESTMORELAND COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Lost 11-6)
In game two,
Jayson Ehrhart (Phoenixville, PA/Spring-Ford) (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, allowing 3 hits and 3 earned runs over 1.2 innings of work.
Ryder Hertzler (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) made the start on the mound and scattered 5 hits over 3 innings and fanned five.
Brad Rissmiller (Nazareth, PA/Pen Argyl) allowed 3 hits over 1 inning of relief work and surrendered 3 unearned runs.
The Spartans trailed, 5-1, entering the top of the fifth inning and were able to plate 3 runs, cutting the Wolfpack lead to, 5-4.
Kamron Kensicki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) delivered a 2-run single in the top of the sixth inning to give the Spartans the lead, 6-5. Westmoreland answered with 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take back the lead, 11-6. and the Spartans were unable to answer in the top half of the seventh inning to end the game.
Northampton is now 4-4 overall.
The Spartans are back on the field on Wednesday as they are scheduled to play Community College of Rhode Island and 12pm and NJCAA DII Henry Ford Community College at 3pm.
