Baseball Splits on Day Five of Spring Trip

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Northampton Baseball team split their two games on Wednesday at the Ripken Experience Baseball Complex. The Spartans defeated Community College of Rhode Island, 20-3, and fell short against NJCAA DII opponent Henry Ford Community College, 12-9.

GAME ONE vs COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND (Won 20-3)

The Spartans offense erupted for 20 runs on 10 hits in the 5-inning run rule shortened contest against CC of Rhode Island. The Spartans fell behind, 1-0, after the first inning, but then plated 4 runs in the second, 2 runs in the third, 10 runs in the fourth and 4 more in the top of the fifth to seal the win.

Juan Cruz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, the sophomore lefty pitched three innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 1 strikeout. Ryan Speers (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) pitched the final two innings, allowing 2 unearned runs and 1 hit with a strikeout.

Tyler Reichenbach (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led the offense for the Spartans with a 2-5 effort at the plate that included three runs scored, an RBI double and grand slam home run, all for 5 RBI. Zack Schaedel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 1-1 with a double and 3 RBI and Matt Tankred was also 1-1 with a pinch-hit t bases clearing double for 3 RBI. Josh Brancy (Sparta. NJ/Sparta (NJ)) was 1-3 with 2 runs scored and a triple. Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) and Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) both went 1-2 with an RBI and each had a stolen base in the win.

GAME TWO vs HENRY FORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Lost 12-9)

The Spartans lost in a hard fought back and forth contest in their second game of the day, losing a late lead and falling short against NJCAA DII Henry Ford Community College, 12-9.

Carver Perrone (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) had the start on the mound for the Spartans and earned a no-decision, firing 5.1 innings and allowing 7 hits and 6 earned runs with 5 strikeouts. Ben Warner (Alexandria, VA/Alexandria City (VA)) (0-2) suffered the loss in relief.

Trailing, 9-3, entering the bottom of the 6th innings the Spartans were able to plate 6 runs in dramatic fashion to tie the game, 9-9. Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) and Tyler Reichenbach (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) got the rally started with back to back singles to start the inning, and a double steal put runners on second and third. Matt Tankred delivered with a 2 run double and later scored on an RBI single by Aiden Pearson (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) and the Spartans cut the lead down to, 9-6. Josh Brancy (Sparta. NJ/Sparta (NJ)) walked and Pearson advanced to second base. Zack Schaedel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) stepped to the plate and came through with a 3 run home run to center field to tie the score, 9-9.

Henry Ford was able to push across three runs in the top of the seventh inning and were able to hold on for the win over the Spartans, 12-9.

The Spartans are 5-5 overall and wrap up their Spring Trip on Thursday with a 9am game against PSU-Beaver at the Ripken Complex.
