BETHLEHEM, PA - The Northampton baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Delaware County Community College to open their Region 19 three-game series on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Spartan Park.
The Spartans battled back with a dramatic come from behind win in game one, 12-9, and cruised to a , 12-1, win in game two, taking a, 2-0, series lead over the Phantoms.
GAME ONE - Won 12-9
Trailing, 5-3, with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Spartans rallied for 9 runs to take the lead and held on for the wild win.
Matthew Tankred (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) came through with the big hit, a grand slam home run, to ignite the 9 run rally and to put the Spartans back on top. The Spartans were able to hold off a 4 run Phantoms comeback in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win.
Leading, 12-8, in the top of the 7th inning,
Juan Cruz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) came in to get the final two outs and shut the door on the Phantoms.
Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 3-4 with 3 runs scored and an RBI and
Zack Schaedel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 2-3 for the Spartans.
Josh Brancy (Sparta. NJ/Sparta (NJ)) was 1-2 with a double and 3 RBI.
Matthew Tankred (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) was 2-4 with a home run and 5 RBI.
GAME TWO - Won 12-1
Nate Unger (Allentown, PA/Parkland) picked up the win on the mound for the Spartans, firing 5 innings allowing no runs on 6 hits and striking out 1.
Ben Moretz (Allentown, PA/William Allen) came on in relief and pitched 2 innings and recorded 3 strikeouts.
Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 1-4 with a double and an RBI and
Aiden Pearson (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) was 2-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
John Pushkar (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) was 1-2 with a stolen base along with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI.
Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) was 1-2.
Northampton improves to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in the Region.
Delaware County slips to 0-10 overall and 0-10 in the Region.
The Spartans and Phantoms will wrap up their Region 19 series on Monday at 3:30pm at the Phantoms Baseball Complex.
