BETHLEHEM - Pa. - The Northampton baseball team earned a hard fought doubleheader split with #8 RCSJ-Cumberland, falling in game one, 15-4, and rebounding to take game two, 17-15, on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Park.
The Spartans defeated the Dukes on Friday afternoon, 8-6, and with the doubleheader split on Saturday, earn the Region 19 series win over the Dukes, 2-1.
"Wild day of baseball," explained Spartans Head Coach
Adrian Yaguez, "We went back and forth all day today and glad we were able come out with the split and the series win. I was proud with how our team hung in there today when things got tight. This is a good series win."
GAME ONE - Lost 15-4
Gavin Panovec (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) suffered the loss on the mound for the Spartans in game one, falling to 2-4 on the season, as he pitched 2 innings allowing 3 hits and 4 earned runs.
Brad Rissmiller (Nazareth, PA/Pen Argyl) and
Isaiah Sack (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) both saw time in relief. Sack pitched 3.1 innings, giving up 2 hits and not allowing an earned run.
Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 1-3 with a double and
Kyle Stoner (Burlington Township (NJ)/Burlington Township (NJ)) was 1-4 with 2 RBI.
Max Landis (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was 2-2 for the Spartans.
GAME TWO - Won 17-15
The Spartans quickly jumped out to a, 9-1, lead after the first inning and saw the Dukes answer with 9 runs of their own in the top of the second inning to tie the score, 10-10. Both teams went back and forth with several lead changes in the later innings, as the Spartans were able to jump out again, 17-15, and hold for the win in a wild finish at Spartan Park.
Josh Brancy (Sparta. NJ/Sparta (NJ)) was 2-3 with a double and 2Â runs scored and
Drew Mulligan (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) was 5-5 with 2 RBI to help lead the 16 hit attack.
Kyle Stoner (Burlington Township (NJ)/Burlington Township (NJ)) was 2-4 with 4 RBI and
Danny Qualteria (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 2-3 with 4 runs scored.
Zack Schaedel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 2-3 with 1 run scored and 3 RBI.
Nate Unger (Allentown, PA/Parkland) picked up the win in relief with 5.1 strong innings, allowing 6 runs and striking out 2.
Ben Moretz (Allentown, PA/William Allen) came on in the 7th inning to record the save. Moretz pitched 0.2 innings and recorded a strikeout for the win.
Northampton improves to 19-12 overall and 12-6 in the Region.
RCSJ-Cumberland slips to 20-9-1 overall and 12-7 in the Region.
The Spartans are back on the field on Monday when they host NJCAA DII County College of Morris in a non-conference match-up at 3:30pm at Spartans Park.
