BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The nationally ranked Northampton women's volleyball team fell in an upset on Saturday afternoon to visiting Raritan Valley Community College, dropping the match, 3-1, (15-25, 16-25, 25-18, 24-26), at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The Spartans had climbed to #8 in the most recent NJCAA national poll released earlier this week.
The Spartans dropped the first two sets and regrouped to take the third set to get back into the match against the Golden Lions. Northampton fell short in an intense fourth set, 24-26, for their first loss of the season.
"Tough one today," explained Spartans Head Coach
Rachael Aquila, "We were not sharp today and it cost us. Give Raritan Valley credit, they have a nice team and they got it done today. We will regroup and put this behind us. We have a lot of season ahead of us."
Kornelia Wszolek (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) led the Spartans with 10 kills and
Amanda Rivera (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) had 9 kills and
Kyra Miller (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) added 7 kills in the loss.
Sophia Tyma (Bethlehem, PA/Lehigh Valley Academy) had a team high 5 blocks and
Allie Keck (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had 31 assists and 16 digs.
The Spartans slip to 3-1 overall and and 1-1 in Region 19.
Raritan Valley improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Region.
Northampton is back on the court on Monday, September 14th when they travel to Dover, Delaware to take on NJCAA DII opponent Delaware Technical & Community College at 6pm at the DTCCÂ Recreation Center.
