Soccer Upsets 15th ranked Brookdale

Pat Szarzynski earned the win in goal for NCC
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Kyle Coover's goal in the second overtime gave the NCC men's soccer team a 3-2 upset of 15th ranked Brookdale Community College on Monday afternoon.

The Jersey Blues, who entered the game with a 14-3-0 record, took an early 1-0 lead before NCC's Josh Hoff tied the contest with a blast to the upper corner past the Brookdale keeper, making it 1-1.

Seth Dempsey gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead right before halftime as he scored his 11th goal of the season with 1:08 remaining.

The Spartans continued to dominate play in the second half before a bizarre play by a Brookdale player tied the game with 9 minutes remaining.  NCC had purposely kicked the ball out of play to allow an injured Brookdale player to be treated.  On the ensuing throw-in by Brookdale, which soccer sportsmanship warrants that the ball be thrown to a NCC player without pressure, a Brookdale player intercepted the throw-in and scored uncontested as everyone looked on in disbelief, tying the game at 2-2.

Brookdale took over in the first overtime, continually putting pressure on the Spartan net, but goalkeeper Patrick Szarzynski came up big to keep the score deadlocked.

Coover then scored his second game-winning goal in two games, when he found the back of the net in the second overtime, setting off a raucus celebration on the Spartan bench.

The victory extends Northampton's unbeaten streak to eight games, as they improve to 8-5-2 overall and 7-5-2 in Region XIX.

The Spartans host Montgomery County Community College on October 20th at 3:30pm.
