BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The NCC baseball team opened Region XIX play on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader split vs. Union County College.
In game one
Demetri Christofes (1-2) went all seven innings, but suffered the loss as Mark Garcia hit a two-run single in the top of the 6th to give Union a 3-2 lead, and ultimately, the victory. Christofes scattered six hits, striking out six and allowing two earned runs.
Tony Gotshall was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, while
Greg Kolaronda was 2 for 2 with a double to lead the Spartan offense.
In game two the Spartans pounded out 18 hits en route to a 17-7 victory. National Pitcher of the Week
Chris Chamberlain earned the complete game victory, striking out four, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Joey Bamford was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and Gotshall (two triples) added 3 RBI and 3 runs scored to pace the Spartans at the plate.
Eric Bohem continued to swing a hot bat, finishing 3 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI and
Ryan Mickley added 4 runs scored to go with his 2 for 5 performance at the plate.
The split puts NCC at 7-9 overall and 1-1 in Region XIX.
The Spartans will travel to Scranton, PA on Tuesday to face Division II Lackawanna College in a doubleheader, starting at 2:00pm.
