BETHLEHEM, Pa. - NCC Head Coach
Adrian Yaguez wasn't sure if his Spartans had just lost, or simply run out of innings as he walked off the field following a 15-13, back-and-forth, extra-inning loss to NJCAA Division II Salem Community College on Tuesday afternoon.
"Offensively we battled all day," remarked a visibly drained Yaguez, "but we just couldn't get people out, you can't give up 18 hits and expect to win in college baseball."
Yaguez was correct in his assessment of the offensive firepower shown by the Spartans, with
Joey Bamford finishing 5 for 6,
Christian Joest going 4 for 5 (including his 3rd homerun of the season) with 4 RBI and
Eric Bohem adding a 3 for 5 performance with 3 RBI.
Bohem put the Spartans up 12-11 in the bottom of the 8th inning with a two run single, only to see Salem respond with two runs in the top of the 9th on a two-run triple by Gabe DeAscanis.
The Spartans responded in the bottom of the 9th as
Ryan Mickley was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a single by Bamford, tying the score at 13.
In the top of the 10th, Jim Edelman hit a two-run triple off
Frank Holmberg, which proved to be the deciding blow for Salem, giving them a 15-13 lead.
Kyle Meadows pitched a scoreless 10th to seal the victory for Salem and send NCC to their 5th straight loss.
The Spartans, now 12-15 overall, travel to Cumberland County College on Thursday for a Region XIX doubleheader.
Salem improves to 4-14 with the victory.
