Soccer Set to Kick-Off 2010 Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After two weeks of practice it is time for the NCC Spartan soccer team to take the field in their first Region XIX contest as they host Bergen County College today at 3:30pm.

"We are definitely excited," exclaimed Head Coach Ned Yelovich, "I can't wait for us to take the field and compete.  I am not worried about the outcome, I want us to play together, play hard and play smart ... the wins and losses will take of themselves."

The Spartans, who last season captured the state championship in their last season of Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) play, only return three players from that squad.  Goalkeeper Patrick Szarzynski, midfielder Kevin McCoy and midfielder Seth Dempsey each played key roles during last season's 14-5-0 campaign.  "I will be relying on these three for their leadership as we go through the season," commented Yelovich, "they all have been through the rigors of a college season and hopefully they can lend some guidance to our young squad."

Top newcomers for Yelovich include; Stephen Underwood, Melvin Amonte, Josh Hoff, Zach Wasilick and Luis Glavez.  "Obviously these young guys need to step in immediately and produce ... we don't have a choice, they need to be ready to play from day one."

Bergen finished the 2009 season with a 6-5-1 overall record.

The Spartans return to action on September 2 when they travel to Cumberland County College for a 4:00pm contest.
