Spartans Earn Split with Union County

Joey Bamford was 4 for 7 on the day
CRANFORD, NJ - The NCC Baseball team split a Region XIX doubleheader on Tuesday at Union County College, taking game one 6-5 and dropping game two 6-5 on a walk-off 3-run homerun by Nicholas Martins.

In game one, Taylor Magditch (2-0) earned his second victory in as many starts, going 5 innings and allowing 4 earned runs.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the 3rd, Richie Eilenberger singled, advanced to second on a ground out by Joey Bamford (2 for 3) and then scored on a double by Christian Joest (2 for 4).  After a walk to Mike Tenaglia, Kyle Dauscher singled to score Joest, making the score 2-1.

NCC took advantage of two Union County errors in the 4th inning to score 3 runs and regain the lead at 5-3, as Freeman, Eilenberger and Bamford each scored.

Tony Gotshall reached based on an error in the 5th, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Freeman, went to third on a single from Ryan Mickley (3 for 5) and eventually scored on a Bamford single putting the Spartans up 6-3.

Union added a run in the 5th and 6th to cut the score to 6-5, but Aaron Barry came on in relief in the 7th inning and slammed the door for his 5th save of the season.

In game two, NCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Eilenberger and Bamford each singled in the top of the 1st and Mike Tenaglia (2 for 3) singled home Eilenberger.  Eric Bohem scored the second run on an Elliot Freeman single in the 2nd inning after leading off with a double.

Eilenberger (3 for 4) and Bamford each singled to lead off the 5th, advanced on a passed ball and then scored on a single from Joest, putting NCC back in the lead, 4-2.

In the top of the 7th, Kyle Dauscher doubles with two outs and Bohem singles up the middle to score Dauscher giving the Spartans a 2-run cushion at 5-3.

Head Coach Adrian Yaguez turned to ace reliever Aaron Barry for the bottom of the 7th, but a walk and an error led to the dramatic finish by Martins, who drilled a Barry offering into the stands for a 3-run walkoff homerun to give Union the 6-5 upset victory.

Greg Taylor earned a no-decision, going 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 9.

The split puts NCC at 9-3 in the Region and 19-7 overall heading into a doubleheader at first place Middlesex on Wednesday.

Union is now 5-10 in the Region and 10-16 overall.
